Renato Sabbadini
Biography
Renato is a doctoral researcher at the Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) research group and a member of the Health and Aging Law Lab (HALL). He started his PhD in January 2023 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Paul Quinn.
His interests gravitate around the impact of modern technologies, especially AI, on rights and freedoms, in particular the right to privacy and freedom of speech.
With a background in linguistics, he graduated summa cum laude in 1995 at the University of Bergamo (Italy) with a master thesis on the topic of epistemic modality in Russian. He then worked in the same University as assistant to Professor Monica Berretta, teaching introductory courses of phonetics, morphology and German language. He also published a paper on epistemic modality and grammaticalization in Linguistica e Filologia 2 - Quaderni del Dipartimento di linguistica e letterature comparate (Università degli Studi di Bergamo) in 1996. He then took a break from academia and started a political and CSO career, first in the City Council of Bergamo (1995-2004), then as advisor to the President of the Greens/EFA Group at the European Parliament MEP Monica Frassoni (2004-2009), then as researcher at the German political foundation Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung in Brussels (2011-2013), then as Executive Director at the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) (2013-2018), then as CEO of ALL DIGITAL, the European federation of digital competence centres (2019-2021).
