Olga Gkotsopoulou
Biography
Olga joined the PhD programme at LSTS at the VUB Faculty of Law and Criminology in 2018. Her PhD research focuses on the EU data protection legal language and accessibility.
She has worked for a number of research projects, including: SOCIO-BEE (Wearables and droneS fOr CIty Socio-Environmental Observations and BEhavioral ChangE), Cyber-Trust (Advanced Cyber-Threat Intelligence, Detection, and Mitigation Platform for a Trusted Internet of Things), PROTEIN (Personalized nutrition for healthy living) and DPL X Covid 19 (Data-driven approaches to Covid-19 & Data Protection Law). For the latter, she additionally contributed to the Data Protection Law & Covid-19 Observatory.
She holds a Bachelor of Laws from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, a Master of Laws in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law from the European University Viadrina, an Advanced Master of Laws on Intellectual Property and ICT Law from KU Leuven and a Multilingual Master of Arts in Linguistics and Literary Studies from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. During her undergraduate studies, she was a visiting student for a semester at the University of Helsinki.
Keen on data protection and privacy issues, Olga previously worked and interned for the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) of the European Parliament in Brussels, the Free Software Foundation Europe in Berlin, the Hellenic Data Protection Authority in Athens, the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform of the World Health Organisation in Geneva and the Greek Council for Refugees in Athens. In 2019, as part of her research project, Olga did a study visit at the EU Fundamental Rights Agency in Vienna.
Olga was the news editor for the LSTS website (2019-2021), co-organised the LSTS/FRC Gender, Technology and Law Series (2020-2021) and was a panel liaison for the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection conference (2019-2022). She co-coordinated the LSTS Book Club for two years (2021-2022) and was member of the LSTS Blog Editorial Team (2022). She has also been a member of the Data Protection Law Scholars Network Management Committee (2021-2022).
