We are pleased to share that HALL will organize a panel at CPDP.ai 2025 conference (21-23 May, Brussels, Belgium), titled “Global Perspectives of Regulating Genetic Data in Scientific Research: What Else Beyond Privacy?”. Two HALL members, Professor Paul Quinn and Ruoxin Su, will also join the panel as speakers.
This panel will examine how different jurisdictions approach the regulation of genetic data in scientific research, moving beyond the traditional focus on privacy. While the EU emphasizes data protection, its current frameworks, such as the GDPR and the European Health Data Space (EHDS), often overlook the broader legal attributes of genetic data. In contrast, countries like China and the US reflect alternative approaches: China treats genetic data as a matter of national security and bio-sovereignty, while the US promotes innovation through a market-driven regulatory model.
The discussion will highlight the global perspectives of regulating genetic data in the context of scientific research, and the urgent need to rethink legal strategies in light of ethical, societal, and geopolitical considerations. The panel will also be contributed by Dr. Róisín Á Costello (Trinity College Dublin) and Johanna Rahnasto (Roschier) and moderated by Dr. Andrea Martani (University of Basel).
